Occupational safety is a priority in every sector and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
are at the heart of this mission. Particularly relevant are the protective clothing that, for
be considered reliable, must comply with precise regulations. Here, we will focus
attention to three essential regulations relating to workwear: EN ISO 13688,
EN ISO 11612 and EN ISO 11611.
EN ISO 13688: General requirements
EN ISO 13688 lays down the basic requirements for ergonomics, safety,
sizes, aging, compatibility and marking that each safety garment
must have. In addition to this, the standard clearly specifies that in the label
of each garment shall be indicated:
• Manufacturer’s mark or identification
• Product name or code
• Size of garment
• Reference standard
• Maintenance instructions and number of washing cycles
• Specific pictogram
EN ISO 11612: Protective clothing against fire and heat
For use in sectors such as steel industry, foundry industry and petrochemical industry,
clothing comply with this standard protect the body (except hands) from heat sources and/or
flame. The standard also extends to caps, gaiters and boot covers, but does not set requirements for
visor or respiratory equipment.
Beside the pictogram, there must be:
A. Propagation of flame
B. Convective heat (1-3)
C. Radiant heat (1-4)
D. Splashes of molten aluminium (1-3)
E. Cast steel splashes (1-3)
F. Contact heat (1-3)
EN ISO 11611: Protective clothing for welding and related processes
Focused on the welding industry and related activities, this regulation establishes
safety requirements and test methods for protective clothing. It's important to specify that
in the case of work clothes corresponding to EN ISO 11611, the PPE in question must
dress the worker entirely.
• Class 1: Manual welding with slight splash and drop formation
• Class 2: Manual welding with strong splash and drop formation
• A1 or A2: Flame propagation
The correct choice of workwear can make the difference in ensuring safety
of every worker. Knowing these regulations is fundamental to ensure a
optimal protection and be in line with international standards.
